Shop Consignment: A Win for Your Wallet, Downtown York, and the Planet

Oct 5, 2020 | Blog

Downtown York retailers are no strangers to the latest fashions, art, housewares, and accessories, and My Girlfriends Wardrobe and Artemis Vintage are no strangers to the consignment side of retail, bringing new-to-you quality items to spruce up your closet and home. Choosing to shop consignment is not only a smart move for your wallet, but also a smart move for the planet as it reduces greenhouse emissions and water usage from production and shipping and reduces the number of clothing items that are burned or sent to landfills each year. Today we celebrate National Consignment Day with My Girlfriend’s Wardrobe and Artemis Vintage.

My Girlfriend’s Wardrobe began online as a college project during owner, Alex’s, junior and senior year of college in 2012. A year later the store established roots in the Market District of Downtown York. Fast forward to 2020, My Girlfriend’s Wardrobe has 200 items on the floor at all times with 400 pieces in processing, like Louis Vuitton handbags, Jimmy Choo pumps, Free People denim, and Tiffany & Co. jewelry, a customer base Alex describes as ‘the best’ and ‘loyal’, and a new home at 38 N. Beaver St. Consigning items with My Girlfriend’s Wardrobe can be done by making an appointment online at mygirlfriendswardrobe.net, or shop consigned items 7 days a week in-person, on My Girlfriend’s Wardrobe social media through live videos, or on the website.

Over the weekend, Artemis Vintage celebrated their one-year anniversary in the Royal Square District of Downtown York. The multi-vendor and consignment vintage and antique market is the perfect combination of everything nostalgic, groovy, and truly unique but completely applicable for all styles of shoppers. Each consigned item at Artemis Vintage has its own flare which can be seen through handmade pieces like baby items and hand crafted candles, artwork like the skateboard grip tape in the skate shop, or vintage finds like the mid-mod record player. Located at 113 S. Duke St., you can shop in-person Tuesdays through Sundays from one of the many vendors or consigned items sprinkled throughout the vintage market.

Choosing to consign an item rather than throwing it away is a large victory for the planet, though it may feel like a small action to us. Choosing to purchase a consigned jacket from My Girlfriend’s Wardrobe or consigned piece of furniture from Artemis Vintage is something we can easily do as consumers while providing a large victory for these Downtown York small businesses and the consigners they support.
