Passionate Vendors Push Penn Market to Thrive

Mar 28, 2022 | Blog

Penn Market, the oldest market in York County, has recently experienced an exciting influx in new vendors and customer activity, further proving its relevance and impactfulness as a pillar in the WeCo District. The historic market, located on the corner of Market St. and Penn Street, holds nostalgic feelings for many of its customers and vendors alike. Since Penn Market first open its doors in 1866, it’s been a staple in the community for small business owners to sell goods and for residents to purchase quality groceries. With a variety of fresh fruits, produce, meats, cheeses, specialty foods, desserts, and now even wine, Penn Market continues to be a one stop shop for all.

Meet the newest vendors of Penn Market:

Caraballo Sisters
Owner, Justine has a passion for cooking and bringing quality Puerto Rican foods to her friends and family, a talent she learned from watching her mom in the kitchen while growing up. All dishes are made fresh daily and the menu often rotates, so follow Caraballo Sisters on Facebook for daily specials!

Custom Subs
Shop for the week from the cold case and pick from fresh salads, deli meats, cheeses, bread, soups, and more, and grab one of their locally famous packed subs to go. The original Custom Subs (18 N. Penn St) will now be closed on Saturdays to accommodate the busy market day, but find them right down the street inside Penn Market for an even wider assortment of groceries and to-go options.

Garden Gate Fine Foods
Chef Susan Booker, owner of Garden Gate Fine Foods, has over 20 years of experience as a Caterer and Personal Chef and offers these services through Garden Gate as well. Garden Gate offers a wide variety of Brownie products including the unique and very popular Creme Brulee Brownie developed by Chef Booker.

Mark & Val Wines
It started as a hobby, and is now a bustling business. From the Sweet Wines like Raspberry Peach Sangria, Pomegranate, and Pineapple Pear, to the Semi Dry and Dry Wines like Liebfraumilch, Riesling, and Chardonnay, Mark and Val make everything in their home.

Michael’s Low Country Kitchen and Bakery
Michael Breeland, owner, has a passion for baking and cooking. He specializes in cheesecakes, breads, Sweet Potato Pie, cobbler, cupcakes and more.

Thou Art & Natural Products
Thou Art & Natural Products is a creative play on words that means “Your Art & Natural Products” and perfectly describes Dr. Felicia O. A. Dennis’ background as a minister and her connection to serving the community through the products she offers. Stop by for shea butters, some essential oils, Black soaps, oatmeal soaps, jewelry, and accessories, fragrance oils, incense, clothing and jewelry.

Slow and Low BBQ
Just opened on March 18, Slow and Low BBQ brings Central Texas BBQ to the WeCo District! Chopped Brisket Sandwich, Baked Mac, House Texas BBQ sauce, and more.

The Sweetest Thing
Owner, Marisa Wilson, always envisioned opening an old fashioned candy store in Downtown York, and loved the charm that Penn Market provided. In addition to nostalgic sweets, gummies, penny candy, and the newest sugary snacks, The Sweetest Thing is also a platform for other local makers and creators, as seen in the Gift Section of the stand.

While Saturdays are the most lively inside Penn Market, shoppers can also visit the market on Tuesdays and Fridays, 6:30am-2:30pm. Please check with each individual vendor for exact operating days and hours.
